A collection of woodcuts and etchings for an exhibition at City Lit. The subject of Szewska’s project is the life-cycle of plants from origin to decay. The exploration began with a single piece of wood sourced from birchwoods in Kraków, Poland. Szewska deconstructed layer upon layer and eventually took this project to the microscopic level of Xylem & Phloem cellular detail.
The etchings
Szewska found a beauty in the changing shapes and textures as the plants shrivelled and became sculptural in form.
She experimented with the way light played upon the surfaces, casting shadows, patterns and textures among the plant leaves.
